HimJodi – Privacy Policy
Last updated: 9 October 2026
HimJodi ("we", "us") is a matrimony app that helps adults in India and Indians abroad find a life partner. This policy explains what personal data we collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the rights you have. It is written to meet India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) and the requirements of Google Play.
Data Fiduciary: […legal name of the owner / company…], […address…], India. Grievance Officer: […name…], support@himjodi.com. We reply within 30 days.
1. Who can use HimJodi
HimJodi is only for people who are legally allowed to marry and are at least 21 years old (the app does not accept a date of birth that makes you younger than 21 or older than 45). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created a profile, contact the Grievance Officer and we will delete it.
A parent, sibling, relative or friend may create a profile on behalf of someone else ("This profile is for"). They must have that person's consent.
2. What we collect
You give us
| Data | Why we need it |
|---|---|
| Email address | To sign you in with a one-time code and to contact you about your account |
| Profile details: name, gender, date of birth, height, marital status, religion, community/caste, sub-caste, mother tongue, manglik status, education, college, occupation, company, income band, family details, city/state/country, residency status, willingness to relocate, diet, smoking, drinking, interests, "About me" | To show your profile to possible matches and to calculate compatibility |
| Partner preferences (age, height, religion, education, countries…) | To suggest suitable profiles |
| Photos | To show on your profile. We re-encode them on your phone, which removes location (GPS) and other hidden information before upload |
| Verification selfie (only when verification is switched on) | So a HimJodi reviewer can confirm you are the person in your photos. It is never shown to other users and is deleted after the review |
| Interests you send, notes, chat messages and voice notes | To let you connect with matches |
| Shortlists, blocks and reports | To run these features and keep the community safe |
| Settings (language, notification choices, privacy choices) | To respect your choices |
Collected automatically
| Data | Why |
|---|---|
| Profile views (who opened whose profile, and when) | For "Who viewed you" |
| Push notification token of your device | To send you notifications you allowed |
| Purchase information from Google Play (product, order ID, purchase token, renewal date) – we never see your card or UPI details | To give you the premium plan you paid for |
| Crash reports and app usage events, only if enabled (Sentry, PostHog) – no names, emails or messages are included | To find bugs and improve the app |
Sensitive data. Religion, community/caste, and income are personal and sensitive. You choose whether to fill them in (except where the profile form requires them) and who sees them. You can hide your income from free members.
3. How your data is shown to others
- Your profile is visible only to signed-in members of the opposite gender whose own profile is complete.
- You can hide your profile at any time (Settings → Privacy & account).
- Photos: you choose who sees them – everyone, only people you have exchanged an interest with, or only premium members.
- Chat is possible only after both of you accept each other (a "match"), and only the two of you can read it.
- If you block someone, you both disappear from each other everywhere in the app and cannot contact each other.
- Your email address, purchase details, reports and push tokens are never shown to other members.
- Screenshots are blocked on other members' profiles and in chats (Android).
4. Why we use your data (purpose and legal basis)
We use your data with your consent, which you give when you create your account, and only for: creating and showing your profile, suggesting matches and compatibility, interests/matches/chat, notifications, premium plans, safety (blocking, reports, scam warnings, rate limits), verification (when enabled), customer support, preventing fraud and misuse, and meeting legal obligations.
We do not sell your personal data and do not use it for third-party advertising.
Automated suggestions. Compatibility percentages and "recommended" profiles are calculated by simple rules (for example, same religion, similar age, same city). They are suggestions only; they do not decide anything about you.
Scam warnings. Messages you receive are checked on your phone for common scam phrases (asking for money, OTPs, gift cards…) so the app can show you a warning. Messages are not blocked and are not sent anywhere for this check.
5. Who we share it with (service providers)
We use trusted providers who process data on our behalf and only as we instruct:
| Provider | What for | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Supabase | Database, sign-in, file storage for voice notes | Everything you store in the app |
| Cloudflare R2 | Photo storage (and verification selfies, when enabled) | Photos, selfies |
| Google (Google Play, Firebase Cloud Messaging) | Payments, push notifications | Purchase records, push tokens |
| Expo (650 Industries) | Delivering push notifications and app updates | Push tokens, notification text |
| Email provider […e.g. Gmail SMTP / domain sender…] | Sending sign-in codes | Email address |
| Google AdSense (this website only) | Showing ads on himjodi.com | Cookies, device and browsing information on this website; no app or profile data |
| Sentry, PostHog (only if enabled) | Crash reports, usage statistics | Device and app information, no profile content |
Some providers store data outside India (for example in the US, EU or Singapore). We only use providers that protect data to standards comparable to Indian law, and we will follow any restrictions the Government of India notifies under the DPDP Act.
Advertising on this website. The himjodi.com website (not the app) shows ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. You can turn off personalised ads at Google Ads Settings, and learn more at How Google uses information from sites that use its services. We never share your app profile, photos or messages with advertisers.
We may also disclose data when the law requires it (for example, a valid order from a court or authority), or to protect members from fraud or harm.
6. How long we keep it
| Data | Kept until |
|---|---|
| Account and profile | You delete your account |
| Chats, interests, matches, shortlists | You delete your account (or the other member deletes theirs) |
| Verification selfie | Deleted right after the review |
| Reports you file | Up to […2 years…] after the report is closed, for safety |
| Purchase records | As long as tax/accounting law requires (usually […8 years…]) |
| Backups | Overwritten within […30 days…] |
Deleting your account (Settings → Privacy & account → Delete my account) permanently removes your profile, photos, interests, matches, messages, voice notes, shortlists, blocks and notification settings. It cannot be undone. Cancelling a Google Play subscription is done in the Play Store; deleting your account does not cancel it.
7. Your rights
You can:
- See and correct your data – Profile → Edit profile.
- Choose who sees you – hide your profile, photo visibility, block.
- Withdraw consent / erase your data – delete your account in the app, or email the Grievance Officer.
- Turn off notifications – Settings → Notifications, or in Android settings.
- Ask what we hold about you, or complain – email the Grievance Officer. If you are not satisfied, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.
- Nominate someone to exercise these rights if you die or become unable to (DPDP Act, section 14) – email us.
8. Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS). Access in our database is limited by row-level security rules so members can only read what they are allowed to; payments are checked with Google on our server; secrets never ship inside the app. No system is perfect: if a breach affects you, we will inform you and the Data Protection Board as the law requires.
9. Safety tips
Never send money, gift cards, OTPs or bank details to someone you have not met. Meet in public places and tell your family. Report anyone who asks for money – use Report on their profile or in the chat.
10. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app before the change applies.
