Himachali wedding traditions
A friendly introduction to Himachali (Pahari) weddings: the dham feast, Nati dance, the Himachali topi and family customs that vary by district.
Every valley has its own customs
Himachal’s weddings differ from district to district and family to family. The best guide is always your own elders – ask them early.
The dham
The dham is the traditional Himachali feast, cooked by botis (traditional cooks) and served to guests seated in rows on leaf plates. Dishes like madra and rajma are common, and the menu varies by region.
Nati
Nati, the Himachali folk dance, is performed in circles to folk music and is part of many celebrations.
The Himachali topi
The colourful Himachali cap (topi) is worn with pride at weddings; styles differ between regions such as Kullu and Kinnaur.
Bringing two families together
However the ceremonies are done, a Himachali wedding is about two families coming together – which is why HimJodi puts family details first.
Questions
Are Himachali weddings the same everywhere?
